Storytelling with Everyday Objects

At Sankofa Nursery, we encourage families to make storytelling part of everyday life, not just something that happens at bedtime. You don’t need fancy storybooks or props to spark a child’s imagination; sometimes, the best stories begin with the things you already have at home.
Start by gathering a few familiar items, perhaps a wooden spoon, a sock, a toy car, or a hairbrush. Lay them out and invite your child to choose two or three objects. Then simply ask, “Who could these belong to?” or “What might happen next?” You’ll be amazed by the creative tales that unfold.
You can take turns adding parts to the story. For example, you might begin: “Once upon a time, a lonely spoon wanted to become a magic wand…” Let your child decide what happens next. This encourages them to express ideas, use new vocabulary, and build confidence in speaking.
Storytelling also strengthens emotional bonds. Children feel valued when adults listen to their ideas and show interest in their imagination. There’s no “right” way, the goal is to share laughter, language, and creativity together.
Try extending the activity by drawing pictures of the story afterward or acting it out with toys. Over time, you’ll notice your child beginning to use more descriptive words and recalling events in sequence, key early language milestones.
